ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO III

The module emphasizes on ‘experiencing space and place’ in architecture. In the subject, students are introduced to, firstly, an exploration of spatial typologies and poetics in architecture; and secondly, the concept of neighborhood and community. In their preliminary design work, students engage with studies and design of different spatial typologies (i.e. linear, spiral, spine, centric, etc.) for a simple dwelling space which explores the idea of architectural tectonics and experiences. Subsequently, the major project involves the design of a small-scale community building (e.g. gallery, small library) in the open landscape/suburban condition which engages with the spirit of place inherent within the site, the site topography, history and socio-cultural events. The design work explores the plan-section integration to achieve architectural form that is tectonically expressive, functional, and responsive to its site. At the same time, design exercise relates to spaces with values and culture, while emphasizing the role of the society in the creative architectural design process.

TAYLOR'S GRADUATE CAPABILITIES

I made sure my consistency and independency was on track as I've set a time schedule to ensure that the ongoing assignments run smoothly and finishes in time.

I sharpen my communicating skills by conveying my messages clearly and point out matters with a proper and polite way.

Delivering my ideas and obstacles I faced to my tutor virtually trained me to apply terminologies precisely.

SELF-REFLECTION

Studio III was a poetics-driven semester, where students are pushed to the limits of extending architecture into people through the 5 senses. Phenomenology and environment of architecture created was carefully considered and streamlined with the responses towards the site and programmes required by brief.

It was indeed a challenging semester, with the transition from manual presentations into digital mediums, giving us a new opportunity to explore. With the help of rendering and BIM softwares, we were tasked to initiate visualization images that could help with emphasizing on the poetics and emotions that we intend to curate.

With the excellent platforms implemented by the school such as TIME'S, FACEBOOK, MS TEAMS and etc., we students achieved a seamless interaction with our tutors apart from presenting our ideas and justification to them beyond boundaries.
