INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING

Journey throughout this module is pronounced both challenging and rewarding with skills and knowledge of the construction industry, specifically regarding drawing conventions and general assumptions of building components. In my view, this module is drawn in aims of providing students an exposure and an introduction that leads to the compose of a complete drawing system applied in the current construction field. Some may fantasize digital drawings using CAD software too much that they forgot that the core and foundation of such drawings sources the basic understandings and illustrations of ideas through manual drawing. Through this module, I was able to polish my skills in technical drawing and furnish my accuracy in drawing with distinctive use of line weights, hatchings and etc. Accuracy of ending the pen tip is as important as providing detail drawings of every view there is, as the convey of information must be precise and neatly presented. To sum up, ITD isn’t just a platform to draw, it’s a great opportunity for us to be exposed to different knowledge that is often regulated to complete a basic set of drawings.

- Assignment 1-

INTRODUCTION  TO TECHNICAL DRAWINGS

In this individual assignment, we were to select an object that would be able to fit within an A4 paper after considering the space allocated for the title block. This assignment exposed us to the basic types of drawings; Top View, Elevations and Section Drawings, together with the skills required to illustrate 3D objects into 2D. A total of 5 orthogonal drawings were manually completed  in 1:1 scale with pencil only.

- Assignment 2-

MY SPACE

Assignment 2 was an excellent platform for us to exhibit the skills we picked up from the first assignment and further escalating the needs of accuracy in drawing by introducing pen as the medium instead of pencil. We were requested to select a space or a room of our own house and further produce the standard set of drawings with addition of at least 1 detail drawing. I've selected my bedroom for this assignment as the subject matter. Common scales were provided for us, adhering to the general convention of drawings in this industry.

- Final Assignment-

TINY HOUSE PROJECT

The final project of this module was a mix of both group and individual work. As a group, we were to gather furniture and materials reference and decide on each specs together as a team. The information compiled were then shared among us and applied in our individual part where we produce another set of drawings for the tiny house we designed personally. It was indeed a challenging yet enjoyable experience as much information was picked up throughout the findings of components in a building, and even exploring some that we never came across.

REVIEW

To summarize, I’d conclude that it was indeed a rewarding module. I’ve picked up knowledge of the building components as well as skills to produce drawings better and more accurately. Neatness of handwritings were indeed a great challenge to me as I was never an artist in writing. However, adoption of methods provided by our lecturer Mr. Akmal Nordin through lectures further improved this situation and perhaps shall I proudly pronounce with distinctive improvement of the writings over 3 assignments, gridlines to constrain the height of the lettering was the secret behind all. This module should be preserved for the coming batches, as it is truly an all-rounded eye opener for one who is to set foot in the construction industry.

I improved my ICT skills by doing information research through Google and Pinterest. It was crucial to know what to find and where to find them effectively.

All research were carried out independently and no blind copying was done. It is trivial to be able to pinpoint the exact part of information in accordance to the respective subject.

I realized that teamwork was even more important, especially in the construction industry as even a simple house construction would require the cooperation within a team.
